Scheme of Learning
Overview of Drama At Toot Hill School
KS3 focus on developing their practical and performance skills, broadening their knowledge of styles and genres, improving their interpersonal skills, exploring social and moral issues and expanding their own ideas and creativity. All students have one period of Drama a week.
KS4 study either GCSE Drama (AQA) or BTEC Technical Award in Performing Arts - Acting Route (Edexcel, level 1/2). Both of which involve students learning about different performance styles and practitioners, such as Frantic Assembly, Stanislavski and Trestle Theatre and developing both devised and scripted work for performance. We aim for students to explore, broaden and deepen their understanding of theatre while maintaining their enjoyment of the art form.
KS5 develop their knowledge of theatre through A level Drama and Theatre (Edexcel) by studying, watching, exploring, experimenting and performing a vast range of texts and topics. They approach performance and analytical work from the perspective of directors, performers and designers. Whilst demanding, this A level offers a true depth of education in the theatre.
Extra Curricular opportunities vary year on year and term by term. In 2019, we have put on a stunning performance of High School Musical at the Newark Palace Theatre which was a marvelous opportunity for our students to rehearse and perform for a 'professional' style show and for our backstage team to learn about costumes, set and props. We joined forces with the Music, Art and Technology departments to make this happen. Our KS3 Drama club, run by Mrs Santamaria, has been very popular this year and they have created some very funny and inventive work whilst playing games too! We have had trips to see War Horse and The Madness of King George III and are off to see Aladdin in the West End in July for Activities Week. We also have some professional actors coming in to deliver a workshop for our year 10 GCSE students soon.
On the following pages our Scheme of Work outlines are provided. For more detailed information please contact Ms Melody Britton, Performance Director.
