Secondary school-aged vaccination programmes

The information below has been provided by Nottinghamshire County Council and has been developed in partnership with Intrahealth, your school aged immunisation service and public health teams to support families in understanding the role of vaccinations in school and how the health professionals and school work together regularly throughout the academic year.

Our role in partnership

In this school we work in partnership with our local health services to offer school aged vaccinations. We facilitate many school-based vaccination (immunisation) sessions throughout the academic year. Sessions are held in school to ease the need for you, and all our families, in planning and attending multiple clinics. This minimises disruption to education and to parents and carers having to take time out of work to attend appointments.

As part of our learning, we cover the role of vaccinations in protecting individuals and communities against preventable diseases. We also teach students about their responsibilities to stay healthy and care for others.

You will be provided with information about each of the vaccinations offered, so that we can ensure our students and those of you with parental responsibility are informed and able to provide consent. We encourage you to hold healthy conversations at home based on the vaccination information provided and together we can support your child and the vaccination programme.

Vaccination consent

You will be asked to provide consent for each child, for each vaccination offered.

You will receive a digital or paper consent form. Please complete a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ form for your child. Where consent forms are not completed or returned, the vaccination team will attempt to call you and confirm a verbal response.

Only one person with parental/legal responsibility is required to provide verbal, written or digital consent. It is important this is discussed with your child before making a decision.

If your child doesn’t feel comfortable to receive the vaccination on the day in school, they can discuss their concerns with the nursing team and referred to an out of school community clinic. They will not be forced to receive a vaccination by any adult or child present.

Please be aware that each young person has the right to self-consent if deemed competent by a healthcare professional and if deemed competent offered the vaccination on the day. This medical assessment is known as Gillick Competency.

Out of school vaccination sessions

If your child misses a vaccination in school or if you feel your child would benefit from your presence during their vaccinations, please ask the immunisation team for details of the community clinics nearest to you (these are often in the school holidays). We will do our best to share clinic information with families as soon as it is made available to us. Appointments can be made by contacting the school aged immunisation team.

Contact the team

The school aged immunisation team are available to speak to and offer their advice and guidance about children’s vaccination programmes, how they manage and deliver school sessions and out of school clinics in your area. They welcome your feedback and recommendations on how they can improve their service. Additionally, you may seek support from your GP.
