Art Curriculum Intent

“The arts enable us to have experiences we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition”

Elliot Eisner

Art and Design inspires students to take risks, interpret visual literacy and develop an appreciation of the highly visual society which we live in. Our ambition is to drive students to interpret the visual language of art, questioning the status quo and share their personal voice, self-expression and perspectives. We aim for our students to develop natural curiosity about the world we live, historical and current events which facilitates deeper thinking, emotions and creativity.

Our curriculum combines the theory and evolution of Art and the real life application of design, which inspires students to be playful, inventive, reflective, and technically proficient. We encourage students to delve deeper into the comparison of art, created for different purposes, from different cultures and their impact on society. We deliberately select significant historical artists and contemporary makers and designers, as well as encourage students to discover inspirational artists through time.

We purposefully sequence ambitious knowledge starting with an understanding of the formal elements, which is then applied and refined through their drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, photography and other art, craft and design techniques.

In Art and Design, we aim for our artists to become:

  • Imaginative with their thoughts and ideas
  • Courageous in their stance and viewpoints
  • Confident to share and express their individual creativity
  • Highly skilled practitioners
  • Self-assured analysts of Art and Design in the wider world
  • Reflective upon their own work and that of others
