Practical PE and Games Curriculum

Pupils work in groups set on their personal motivation towards PE in KS3 PE. The groups work on similar activities with objectives tailored to the needs of different groups.

All lessons are tailored to ensure students become "Physically Literate" and inspire students by promoting a positive environment for students to develop a love and life-long commitment to sport and physical activity. All lessons will include the following aspect to develop students':

  • Head - This will focus on the knowledge students will be learn by the end of the lesson including rules and regulations, tactics, problem solving, analysis, feedback, responsibility, knowledge and understanding, strategy and decision making.
  • Heart - This will focus on how the students will develop, demonstrate and learn to transfer key concepts in terms of skills, attitudes and values including purpose (Self-motivation and confidence), responsibility (independence, reliability, communication, leadership and teamwork), integrity (Honesty, fairness, self-awareness, courage and respect), determination (focus, perseverance, resilience and effort) and empathy (Compassion, acceptance, consideration and kindness)
  • Hands - This will focus on what movement or skills students will practice and develop including physical ability, fitness levels, competition, skills technique, creativity and movements.
  • Wider Knowledge to encourage students to critically think about the influence and power sport has on society, participation and culture and encourage life-long engagement.

Year 7 and 8 Practical Curriculum:

  • PE (55 minutes per week) - All students will spend one half term participating in a selection of the following activities; Gymnastics, Dance, Badminton, Table Tennis, Health Related Fitness/OAA, Athletics (Track and Field), Tennis and Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Games (110 minutes per week) - All students will spend one half term participating in a selection of the following activities; Football, Netball, Tag/Touch Rugby, Hockey, Handball, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket and Volleyball

Year 9 and 10 Practical Curriculum

Games (110 minutes per week)

All students will spend one half term participating in a selection of the following sports picked specifically to meet the needs to of the class. These activities include; Badminton, Table Tennis, Health Related Fitness, Dance, Invasion Games (Football, Netball, Handball, Hockey, Rugby and Basketball), Athletics (Track and Field), Striking and Fielding (Cricket, Rounders and Softball), Trampolining and Tennis.

Year 9 students also have the option to complete a Level 1 Sports Leadership Award within their games lessons.

Year 11 Practical Curriculum

Games (110 minutes per week) - The Year 11 PE Experience

Students chose one pathway below for each half term where they will complete lessons in a selection of the sports and activities. Students can stay within the same pathway each half term or change between them.

  • Competitive Pathway - Football, Netball, Handball, Basketball, Badminton, Hockey, Table Tennis, Tennis, Athletics and Cricket
  • Recreational and Emerging Sports Pathway - Spinning, Rowing, Football, Handball, Basketball, Badminton, Athletics (Track), Volleyball, Tennis, Softball, Rounders, Cricket, OAA, Ultimate Frisbee, Crossfit and the Public Gym
  • Health, Fitness and Wellbeing Pathway - Spinning, Rowing, Crossfit, Circuit Training, Weight Training, Interval Training, Continuous Training, HIIT Training, Yoga, Boxercise, Couch to 3km/5km, Public Gym and Bootcamp/Fit for Prom
  • Creative Pathway - Dance, Gymnastics, Zumba, Yoga, Aerobics, Step Aerobics, Cheerleading, Pilates, Trampolining and Exercise to Music.

KS4 PE and Sport Examination Courses

Students begin their GCSE options at the start of Year 10.

  • GCSE PE (OCR)
  • Cambridge National in Sports Studies (OCR)

KS5 PE and Sport Examination Courses

  • A Level PE (OCR)
  • Level 3 BTEC Sport (Pearson)

Extra-Curricular

All students at Toot Hill School are encouraged to engage with the extended study session which we offer in PE. Throughout the year, students can take part in a range of after school clubs which are run by PE teacher and sometimes coaches from local clubs. All PE extended study sessions are inclusive to all students so all students have the opportunity to take part and if they wish represent the school.

Fixtures

Toot Hill School has an outstanding representation nationally and locally for its sporting excellence. In 2020 Toot Hill School was recognised by School Sport Magazine as the 50th top school for sport in the country (independent and state school. Toot Hill was ranked 18th state school overall.

We endeavour to get as many students as possible to participate in extra-curricular activities and experience competitions with other schools at the appropriate level and therefore we compete in a number of different levels of competition.

On a National platform students have been highly success in Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country, Football, Table Tennis and Netball regularly reaching Regional and National Finals.

On a Local platform our teams have been highly success and compete in Football, Hockey, Netball, Cross Country, Netball, Table Tennis, cricket and Athletics.

As a school we are part of the Rushcliffe School Partnership and compete against local secondary schools in Rushcliffe in inclusive events for all ability levels including football, netball, handball, basketball, dodgeball, tag rugby, athletics, cricket and rounders.

If your child is selected to represent Toot Hill School in competitions, they will be given a letter or an email will be sent to parents which has all the necessary details of the fixture. If you have any questions about the fixture, please do not hesitate to contact the PE department.

Due to safeguarding policies, parents/carers from both home and away schools cannot spectate at any fixtures that take place at Toot Hill School before 4.15pm. After 4.15pm parents/carers can come onto school site to spectate and support the fixture.

Parents can support pupils learning in PE by:

  • Encouraging pupils to fully participate in all lessons.
  • Ensuring pupils are in the correct kit for all PE lessons for health and safety reasons.
  • Writing letters in planners, asking for pupils to be excused if they are ill, (excused pupils are still required to bring kit for the lesson - extra layers are advised if a pupil is excused from outdoor lessons).
  • Providing a doctor’s note in the case of long-term illness or injury.
  • Encouraging pupils to take part in school sports clubs and inter-form sport.
  • Participating in physical activity with their children or supporting their participation in sport outside school.
  • Encouraging pupils to let staff know about their participation in sport away from school.
  • Ensuring that medical information regarding their children is kept up to date with the school office.
  • In Year 9, discussing the options that pupils will have to choose within PE in Yr 10 – Core PE, Vocational Sport or GCSE PE. Please see Yr9 Option Handbook or a member of the PE Department.

We are proud to be able to confirm that we have been awarded the Gold School Games Mark for the work we have done this last year in providing opportunities for our students to keep active.
