Weekly Bulletin

~ 30th September 2022 ~

  • Extended Study has been a huge success, please encourage students to attend some sessions.

Year 7 continue to amaze us with their hard work, kindness and determination as they move into week 4 at Toot Hill.

This week has been a busy one, with many students participating in European Day of Languages events on Monday 26th September, including a Bake Sale (photos below of some of the fantastic entries!). The students raised £104 for Macmillian from their generous participations in this event- so a HUGE thank you and well done to all involved.

Students have also been keen to participate in a fantastic range of enrichment opportunities, from football and netball to cookery club. It is amazing to see so many of Year 7 participating in these wider opportunities whilst having fun and making new friends in the process!

Miss Marshall and Miss Barker regularly visit a range of different lessons across the week, we are both so impressed to see the fantastic engagement and your impressive books. We are both so proud all your hard work so far. We can't wait to see what you are capable of as the term continues.

Students have also received their school photo this week. Please note that orders cannot be placed through school and should be placed directly via the photography online website (all details and instructions for this can be found on the back of the proof card). All orders should be placed before 3rd November to avoid the additional delivery fee. Orders can be placed after this date but will incur an additional charge for direct delivery to address. For students who missed their school photo, please don't worry- this will be rescheduled at a later date (TBC).

Keep up the fantastic efforts Year 7! We are so proud of you all.

Head of Year 7: Miss B Marshall

This week during form Year 8 have looked at their attendance and positives so students can set themselves high expectations, there has been an assembly covering high behaviour standards and diversity, Well-being Wednesday covered different barriers to learning such as ADHD, on Thursday tutors read the next part of the class reading book and Fab Friday again was a huge success.

Well done to Eloise who won the best decorated cake and Emily who won best authentic recipe in the Modern Foreign Languages European Bake Off celebration.  The standard of baking was really high and lots of students got involved in the challenge.

The football season started again this week and the Year 8 boys football team travelled to George Spencer Academy in the first round of the County Cup.  The two teams played each other at the end of last season in the South Notts Cup and they are two really evenly matched sides.  George Spencer came out on top with a 2-1 victory however Toot Hill gave a great account of themselves and were unlucky not to have scored a couple more goals.

Head of Year 8: Mr D Mordue

Assistant Head of Year 8:  Miss L Jordan

Well done Year 9, for another excellent week. It has been great visiting lessons this week and seeing the work which students are producing in lessons. Students have been working hard in exercise books and also completing practical tasks in subjects, such as technology. In Food Technology, students have made tarte au citrons this week. Students applied many skills when following this recipe and it was great to see the final pieces!  In History students are completing a unit studying the Vikings. Students have been engaged in this unit and have been completing a learning cycle including origins of the Anglo-Saxons, Viking Invasions and the Norman Conquest. It’s great to see so many students completing our Level 1 Sports Leaders Award in PE. Students have started to plan and lead sports sessions to their peers and we look forward to seeing their leadership skills develop throughout the course.

Year 9 students have been enjoying Extended Study sessions and it was good to see students attending Rugby club on Tuesday. We have a Year 9 match next week and any students who would like to be involved should speak to Mr Mordue, Miss Sheldon or Mrs Gray.

During tutor time this week we have focussed on attendance, wellbeing and our year group reading book. We also had an Assembly on Wednesday where key information was shared about our whole school expectations. Our Fab Friday celebrations continued this week. The following students were awarded ‘Star of the Week’ for their positive behaviour points and attendance:

Positive behaviour points:

Our Personal Development lesson was delivered on Friday afternoon. Students showed maturity when coving ‘consent’ and ‘freedom and capacity to consent’. Our Personal Development lessons cover many important topics and it has been great to see that students have been engaged in each lesson, when discussing key content. Our next Personal Development lesson is on Monday, period 1 which will focus on sexual harassment and violence.

We have given students a copy and order details for their Year 9 school photos. If you would like a copy of your child’s photo, please use the order details on the form to order this. We are unable to take orders through school so this should be done using the details on the form.

Well done Year 9, another great week. Keep up the fantastic work!

This week, we were able to present the next batch of Bronze DofE certificates to our intrepid explorers in Year 10.

Students were presented with a certificate and a badge recognising their excellent teamwork and personal development. We hope to see lots of them continuing this commitment to this through the Silver award in the coming years.

Huge thanks also to Miss Graham and the MFL department for organising a wonderful event on Monday of this week. Students took part in a European Whodunnit, exploring career paths in languages and tricky GCHQ level puzzles!

Head of Year 10: Mrs L Munro

Assistant Head of Year 10: Miss C Thomas

We are very pleased with our year group this week, who have worked incredibly hard on their assessments. Throughout the week, the Year 11s have shown incredible commitment and resilience to doing well and we could not be prouder.

Alongside working hard for their assessments, we have also seen 169 students attend the Extended Study enrichment sessions after school, as part of extended study. The sessions offered the opportunity for student to gain further support and guidance for those key areas that they have been working on. We look forward to seeing many more next week. Should your child require any support in accessing or attending the sessions then please do not hesitate to let that us know.

All Year 7 students have now had their first library lesson in the Learning Lounge and we have really enjoyed meeting them!

Students need to have a reading book in their bags when they come for their lesson, they may borrow a book from the library; we have thousands to choose from and are always willing to recommend something.

Students have been introduced to the opportunities offered by the Learning Lounge including earning credits by completing one of the many reading challenges or the Around the World challenge or by writing a book review. As well as being open during break and lunch, we run clubs after school, this term in addition to private study we have debate club, board games club and book club.

In tutor time Year 7 are reading their gifted book While the Storm Rages by Phil Earle and the exciting news is that in December the author will be visiting school which will be a fantastic opportunity for students to ask questions and learn how the book came to be written.
