Weekly Bulletin

~ 26th May 2023 ~

  • Extended Study for Year 11s and Year 13s will be continuing the first week back after the half term break. Please encourage students to check with their subject teachers if and when the classes are running.
  • There will be no Extended Study for Years 7-10 next week. Extended Study will recommence for these Year Groups from Monday 12 June 2022.
  • School will restart for all year groups on Monday 5th June 2022. Have a wonderful half term break.

As we end our fifth half term of the year, with our final weeks of Year 7 fast approaching... We want to say a HUGE thank you and well done to Year 7 this half term. Despite the challenges of increased room changes and cover due to Year 11 and 13 exams, bank holidays and strike days, Year 7 have responded with the most amazing maturity, with many students going above and beyond to help staff and peers.

This week in lessons, students have been discussing the economic, social and environmental impacts of heatwaves and flooding in Geography, analysing the use of metaphors in poetry in English and discussing the importance of healthy lifestyles on the human heart in Science. This week Miss Barker and Miss Gale popped into many lessons and Miss Gale was so impressed to see Year 7 in a totally different environment in the classroom, compared to on the sports field.

A big shout out to all the students continuing to enjoy all the sports clubs and Extended Study available, last week there was a HUGE number of Year 7s at Cricket Extended Study in the sunshine, and it is great to see so many students taking part in football, netball, dodgeball and athletics as fixtures increase with the warmer weather! Next half term, Year 7 will be able to enjoy sports day on Friday 14th July and Inter-tutor set sports Thursday 20th July (weather permitting, of course!)

Thursday and Friday this week, we enjoyed celebrating the successes from this half term, sharing prizes with students for their hard work and kindness across all areas of school. A big well-done to 7.12 who took the top spot as Tutor Champions! Teacher nominations this half term were simply outstanding, with the most wonderful, heartfelt messages from teachers in recognition of our wonderful young people. I wish I had the capacity to share each and every one with you.

A final thank you and goodbye from me (Miss Barker) as I bow out for a couple of months to have my baby. Being the Assistant Head of Year 7 is the BEST part of my job and I am so grateful I get to work with such a wonderful group of students, parents and tutors. I will miss working with all those wonderful smiley faces, especially Miss Marshall, but I know my chair in the office and the students will be very well looked after by Miss Gale during my maternity leave.

Head of Year 7: Miss B Marshall

Assistant Heads of Year 7:  Miss H Barker & Miss O Gale

Finally, we have had some great weather and the students have been able to use the field all week at lunch.  It really does help having such a big communal space where students can socialise and burn off some energy if they wish, football and frisbee have proved exceptionally popular amongst Year 8s this week.

We have used tutor time this week to celebrate all of the year groups achievements this half term and the year to date.  Attendance, credits, tutor nominations and teacher nominations have all been celebrated.  Huge thanks to those student helpers that have helped us distribute the certificates and confectionary.

At the time of writing this the Year 8 girls football team were making the short journey to West Bridgford FC for their cup final vs National Academy.  Both teams are exceptionally talented and we're sure the final will be keenly contested, good luck to the Toot Hill squad.  There was also a staff and student badminton tournament this week, students from all year groups teamed up with various keen staff members to compete.

Thanks to all Year 8s for their sensible behaviour around the exam venues this week, the Year 11s and exams team have really appreciated it.  Have a great break.

Head of Year 8: Mr D Mordue

Assistant Head of Year 8:  Miss L Jordan

Well done Year 9 for achieving 3462 positive points this week. Over this half term, the year group have achieved 21,517 positive points, fantastic work Year 9! It has been great to see Year 9 students involved in enrichment opportunities this week. Several Year 9 students partnered a member of staff in the ‘staff student badminton’ competition on Thursday after school. Well done to Dylan (9.2) and Mr Cox who won the ‘trophy competition’. Many students also attended a webinar with the NHS on Wednesday where they listened to people talk about the roles they do in the NHS. This was an informative session and students engaged well throughout the session.

The week during our Personal Development Curriculum students have listened to key information about staying safe over half term. This has included information about the dangers of entering open water as the weather gets warmer and also how to keep safe when out in the community, including road safety. Students have also spent time discussing their summer plans and also spent time focussed on the importance of attendance.

Our week has been focused on celebrating the achievements of the year group this half term. It has been fantastic to celebrate so many achievements and we were pleased to see so many students recognised in our celebrations. As we draw towards the end of this half term, it has been lovely to celebrate Year 10 achievement with them during three assemblies this week. Many students were nominated by their teachers' sharing stories of their commitment to their studies, their outstanding contributions in lesson and kindness and respect shown to all. We also celebrated those taking part in extracurricular activities, borrowing books from the learning lounge and having excellent attendance this half term. Special mention to Evie B for winning the Head of Year Award for being the first Gold Award winner in Year 10 (846 credits and counting!) and to Gabi Cooke for winning the Assistant Head of Year Award for her respectful manner and demonstrating the PRIDE values each day with her interactions with staff and students.

We wish our Year 10s and their families a safe and restful break over this sunny half term holiday and looking forward to guiding them through their final half term of this academic year. Please continue to support your child/ren with their work experience and preparing for their Year 10 Assessments (commencing the week beginning 19th June). Finally, please check Scopay and settle the bill to secure your child's attendance to our Celebration trip to Alton Towers by Monday 5th June.

News this Week - Gold DofE Award Ceremony

I was privileged to attend the Gold DofE Awards Ceremony in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. Hundreds of Gold graduates from the UK and abroad were present to celebrate their achievements with their families. Small satellite stages throughout the gardens hosted speeches from well-known celebrities such as Vick Hope (Radio 1), Karthi Gnanasegaram (TV presenter) and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix (diver).  The new Duke, Prince Edward, the King's youngest brother, gave his congratulations and best wishes to the watching Gold achievers and their guests. Of course, a trip to Buckingham Palace wouldn't be complete without a royal cup of tea and cupcake, so I duly obliged.  I will share my experience with both our current Gold participants and the new Year 12 cohort who are due to start Gold in September. I hope to be at the Palace to celebrate with them some time soon.

All students in Year 10 and 12 are expected to do work experience in July. We are finding it increasingly challenging finding opportunities for our students and I would be grateful if parents/carers could ask their places of work if they would be willing to take a student on work experience for the week. If anyone is interested, we will ask the students to send their CV to them and if relevant attend an interview/induction. All employers must have Employers Liability Insurance.  There may also be places in the community where you live who may take a student on work experience too. This is a valuable opportunity for our young people, it helps them develop their transferable skills, develops their independence and they find out what the working world is like before their transition to apprenticeships, FE Colleges, Sixth Form, University or employment.  This is a great opportunity for our young people which they thoroughly enjoy.

If you can help us to get the word out to employers, it would be really appreciated. If you know of anyone who is interested please ask them to contact me ffarmer@toothillschool.co.uk

We are excited to announce that tickets are now on sale for We Will Rock You!
